Starting the New Year with Wellness in Mind: A journey to Balance and Zen

As the new year begins, I find myself reflecting on the past - the challenges, the growth, and the lessons learned.
Living with Hyper Mobility syndrome - Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) has taught me the importance of listening to my body and prioritizing wellness.
As a mom to 2 incredible kids, one of whom is neurodivergent and both navigating hEDS and anxiety in their own ways, I have seen firsthand how critical it is to create a space of calm and connection. And with the world around us often feeling chaotic, I believe now more than ever, we need to cultivate more zen in our lives.

Finding Wellness in my journey with hEDS

Living with chronic pain and fatigue due to hEDS has been a journey of resilience and adaptation. I've learned to balance (still learning) my physical limitations with my passions, from gyrotonic movements to herbal healing. Wellness, for me, isn't about perfection - it's about small, consistent choices that honor what my body needs.

Supporting kids through anxiety and neurodivergence

Raising children who face anxiety and neurodivergence has deepen my understanding of the importance of sensory connection, mindfulness, and routine. From creating calming lavender sachets or pillows for restful sleep to exploring sound healing as a way to ease anxious minds, I've found that simple, intentional practice can make a world of difference.

One of the most impactful practice for our family has been creating a safe place - a personal altar filled with our favorite things. This can be as simple as a small table or shelf where each family member places items that bring them comfort and joy, like a special stone (we love gem stones and crystals for their beauty and benefits), a favorite photo, or a small plant. This space becomes a sanctuary for breathing, grounding, and reconnecting when life feels overwhelming. Encourage your kids to visit this spot whenever they need a moment of calm, reminding them that it's their special place to feel safe.

To make it even more special, use this safe space as a starting point for a simple breathing or meditation practice. Sit together for a few minutes and take slow, deep breaths, counting to four as you inhale and exhale. Encourage kids to close their eyes and imagine their favorite place or a calming color filling the room. This gentle practice helps create a routine of mindfulness and builds a sense of safety and calm in their day.
